Construction season in Douala. All the roads we were on had deep gutters running along the sides for draining rainwater during the rainy season. The gutters were about 18" wide and anywhere from a foot to 4 feet deep, and most were wide open on the top. More than once I saw cars stuck in these gutters, and more than once they were being used by the locals for... other purposes.
